Alonzo "Lonzo" Williams is the Godfather of West Coast Hip-Hop, known for his work as a producer, historian, author, media personality, and philanthropist. Born in Compton, Lonzo began as a DJ and event promoter, eventually opening his nightclub, Eve After Dark, in 1979. There, he showcased new talent, including Dr. Dre and Michel’le with the World Class Wreckin’ Cru.
Lonzo’s club was key in the rise of hip-hop and gangsta rap, including acts like N.W.A. He later managed artists like DJ Battlecat and Compton's Most Wanted. Over 20 years, he built a legacy in venues like Skate Land U.S.A., while also collecting music memorabilia showcased in top museums.
Known for his storytelling, Lonzo has appeared in documentaries like Hip-Hop Evolution and biopics like Straight Outta Compton. In 2015, he released his memoir, N.ot W.ithout A.lonzo, debunking myths about West Coast hip-hop. He also revived his radio show Issues in the Hood and launched two podcasts.
Lonzo now teaches youth about hip-hop through his nonprofit, The Lyrical Revolution, and serves on the board of the Compton Conservatory of Music. After a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2011, he partnered with the American Cancer Society, co-hosting the Hip-Hop Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament. Learn more at www.lonzowilliams.com.
